Implementation

Description of all of our activities during the PDA

"ReSpectrum" took place in Pissouri,Cyprus from 19 to 26 of June 2023 and was implemented by ACPELIA organization. The project managers were Nikolas Nikolaou and Bogos Avedikian and the trainers were Erma Georgiou and Victoria Tkachenko.

DAY 1

  • Introduction

We started with the presentation about project objectives, main topic, activities, rules, timetable by project organizers. Afterwards we moved to the self presentation using a special item. We are sitting in the circle. Participants said their name, pronouns, and put in the middle one item that they brought and told how this item is connected with them.

-EXPECTATIONS and FEARS

Then we expressed our fears and expectations. Every participant was given 2 stickers, on which they have to write their fears, expectations and share with the group. This was an essential activity to share about things that make us feel vulnerable and break the ice between the participants.

Сaring agreement and Youth Pass

Then we worked on a caring agreement - an activity during which participants agree on certain rules and regulations together and create a caring agreement. They write down their needs and wants on the paper. After that, all participants were divided into groups and discussed what they had written. Then they wrote down 3 common things for each stiker and presented it to the others to create a common poster.

Afterwards participants took part in the interactive game about Youth Pass competences. There were 8 different stations with tasks to be completed to receive a stamp for every single one. Participants needed to complete their Youth Pass passport in order to finish the task, which was also a part of a team building.

City Race

At the end of the day, participants were divided into different teams to take part in a City Race - an activity during which participants were given tasks to complete together, asking locals for help and advice, gathering stories, and discovering the surroundings.

  • Problem and Solution Tree

Participants were randomly divided into 6 groups of 6. Each group is given a poster and markers. The task was to create a scheme "problem-solution tree" by choosing one communication problem in the context of sex education. The task was to define the problem and draw a tree with the roots-causes and the branches-results. Another tree should have depicted solutions-roots and branches-effects. Then each groups presented their trees and we moved to debriefing about the learning process.

-Consent and Kinesthetic Learning

Kinesthetic learning is the process that results in new knowledge (or understanding) with the involvement of the learner's body movement (Galeet BenZion).

First, we learnt how to take care of our partner, to ask and to vulnerable. Then, we did the following exercises:

Stimuli

1st One person of the couple gives a touch stimulus to their partner and the partner has to move following the direction of the stimulus.

2nd Roles are switched.

3rd One person of the couple gives a touch stimulus to their partner and the partner has to move against the direction of the stimulus

4th Roles are switched.

Say consent

Stay in the same pair and leader/follower roles switch after every action/reaction. Keep it as a dancing dialogue.

1st If they decide to move following the impulse they say "thank you", if they decide to move against it, they say "excuse me".

2nd While keeping the dancing dialogue they say different words to express acceptance/rejection of the stimulus (eg: no, that's nice, stop...)

3rd While keeping the dancing dialogue, they now stay silent and after a while, they start interacting with other people in the room and reacting to stimuli with body language.

Then we finished with conceptualizing consent and debriefing about our own thoughts and feelings.

-Communication: Blind Director game

An activity "Blind Director"provided an opportunity to experience necessity of the clear communication between people.

The goal was to make a photo-story about sexuality education.

The group was divided in smaller groups (6-7 people) and each person had a different role:

•Director: The Director is the one deciding the topic of the picture, the settings, costumes etc. but he/she/they 's blindfolded and is not allowed to do anything physically. Can speak.

•Photographer: The Photographer is the one manually shooting the picture, he/she/they is has to follow strictly the instructions of the Director. Can't speak.

•Actor(s): The Actor is the one appearing in the photo, can be one or more, he/she/they is has to follow strictly the instructions of the Director. Can't speak.

•Assistant(s): The Assistant take care of the settings and costumes, he/she/they is has to follow strictly the instructions of the Director. The only one who can speak with director and actors.

-Mindfullness: activating all 5 senses

We finished with an activity focused on mindfulness and connecting to our 5 senses. A trainer guided us through a small meditation, then we tried to experience nature in 5 different ways, while being aware of our feelings and reflecting on our emotions after. We finished the day with a body scanning and a reflection to wrap us the day.

Day 3

  • Identity flower and Gender Galaxy

Activity ´Identity flower´: Participants wrote their names on a pistil. Then, they investigated their identity through the intersecting axes and chose an aspect (privilege/oppression) of each axes. They drew each petal with a size that such aspects play the role in their life, and wrote down the name of each petal. In the end, each participant had a flower with 15 uneven flowers. After each one finished their flower, they shared in a couple and then wrapped up the learning experience with debriefing.

Gender Galaxy

Trainer introduced 5 planets:

  1. Biological Sex: Female, Male, Intersex
  2. Gender: Female, Gender non-conforming, Male
  3. Gender Expression: Feminine, Androgynous, Masculine
  4. Sexual orientation: Hetero, Bi/Pan, Homo /// Allosexuality vs Asexuality
  5. Sexual behavior: Sexually attracted to: femininity, women, female / masculinity, men, male

Each participant drew their own galaxy, then we all shared our comments on both tools and how effective they are for non-formal education.

Definitions of violence

The group was splitted into smaller groups. Each team got a different set of definitions and a set of concepts related to gender, violence against women, and sexual harassment, which they had to match together, that is, to put together the concept with its definition.

However, they had more definitions than concepts. Each concept is written on a paper, and each definition was written on a separate paper. Each team should have gotten around 6-10 concepts and definitions to match. Participants had time to go around and read the other concepts to make sure they understand the definitions and the different concepts, and whether they think the match is correct or not.

Each team shortly presented its concepts and asked questions regarding their concepts, and also shared the experiences.

  • Forum theater

Participants were divided into groups, each group chose one from 5 types of violence and created a short performance or an active scene about this case. The other groups were taking part in the performance: everyone could say "stop" in the middle and go on the stage to change one thing about the situation. Using forum theatre, participants learnt about non-violent communication and taking active step into solving the conflict.

  • Art therapy

We wrapped up the day with a cam exercise - art therapy. Participants were listening to a meditation by a trainer to connect with their body and mind. Then they took a big poster and draw their body, fill it with colors and draw the words that describe their emotions. Then, during reflection each participant shared with their thoughts and experiences of the day.Reflection is important for every participant to be aware of feelings, emotions, new skills, and experiences during the project. It also helps to develop communication competences and evaluate project's productivity. Each participant chose one Dixit card which matches their mood and explained their choice.

The groups presented situations with sexuality education in Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Armenia, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and Romania.

Visit to Limassol

Afterwards our group visited the Pissouri Amphitheatre and Limassol city, and learned more about the history of Ancient and modern Greece.
